HomeMy WebLinkAboutLETTER REGARDING A PROPOSED SLAUGHTERHOUSE April 12, 2016
Mayor Prince and City Council Members,
Have you ever heard the phrase saying, "If it is precieved it is believed"? This
has always been a problem in Port Arthur. People who neither live nor pay
taxes in Port Arthur are always trying to give us their opinion of what we should
or should not do. Especially having it printed in the Port Arthur News. The maj-
ority of people who read the Port Arthur News believe it to be true. I was one of
those people until I served on the Port Arthur School Board for 6 years. It seemed
as if the Port Arthur News was always fighting us. I would read the paper the
morning after a meeting and wonder if I had been at the same meeting as the
reporter.
The reason for the above paragraph is to make you aware that I am not writ-
ting this because of what I think is going on. We chose to live in Port Arthur
as opposed to the surrounding communities. We have owned 3 different homes
in Port Arthur. We feel as if Port Arthur is a progressive city. We have many
more businesses that our surrounding cities. We are originally from kansas.
I was raised on a farm and most of our family is still in Kansas. We know per-
sonally what a slaughter house and meat Packing facilities are. There is no
way that you are not aware of where they are located because of the horen-
deous smell. No one in their right mind would choose to live by them. Our
current addreses is 2756 66th St. We can see the business park from our
house. We love being able to open our windows. If you allow the slaughter
house to come in the that will not be an option!!
People choose to live where they buy a home. Much of that decesion is
based on what is in and around where the home is located. We bought in
Port Acres because of the rural area. But we have felt for the past several
years that the city council members, who we helped elect, have not been
representing our interest. We went to meeting after meeting asking that
our neighborhood be kept residential. We were assured it would be so.
But somehow Dailey got part of our neighborhood commercial hummm.
As you leave our street you run straight into his fishing business turned
resturant because after his tax abatement was ended he moved to Ned.
Did money make it under the table??? So our end of Jade (as narrow as
it is) is going to have high traffic, liquor liscense and all.
Now are pleading with you again to please please represent us fairly.
WE DO NOT WANT A SLAUGHTER HOUSE THIS CLOSE TO WHERE WE
LIVE. Another thought! Downtown Port Arthur has a lot of vaccant
property. Why not put it downtown since all of the decent businesses
are located in the outskirts of Port Arthur.
If it is preceived it is believed has become a reality to us. Trying to
turn our residential neithborhoods into 99999 instead of respecting the
fact that we have paid taxes and put money into our homes for years.
The very City Council that took and oath to represent us comes in and
changes one of the reasons we purcahsed our homes in this area.
Do any of you live in our neighborhood?? I have been an elected official.
I realize sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do it. But in this
case the business park is a GREAT asset. Why even consider ruinning
it with horrible smells. Hwy 365 is lined with Businesses - My Goodness
don't ruin it. I suggest Nick Lampson takes it to his neighborhood. We
live at Jade and 365—PLEASE NO SLAUGHTERHOUSE!
Sincerely ,
