Poli~e Beat Reports
Councilm~,,~ Henderson requested a re~ort on ~ho Police Boats in
Port Arthur. Attached is a map provided to rookie officers
showing the boundaries of the police beats. As you can see,
there are 9 Police Beats. The Beats were drawn up several years
back with various factors in mind such as thoroughfares through
the area, population, calls for service, geographical
restrictions, etc.
Usually, at least one officer in assigned to each beat each day
on eac/a shift. On no~e days when no officer is away on vacation
or in training there may be two officers assigned to the busier
beats. On the night shift, d/stricts 8 and 7 are coeabined
occasionally on slow nights. (There are nights during the winter
that a total of only 3 or 4 calls are made in these beats
c~mbined. )
From 9:30pm until 12:30am, the evening shift and night shift
overlap giving double coverage during peak hours.
Officers are assigned to beats once a year b~ their choosing
their beat b~ seniority. That officer is assigned that beat for
a year. The more junior officers ride all the beats as they
serve as days off relief.
Please advise should you need anything further.
