WATSON, DIRECTOR OF PLANNING P.IL NO. 11795 - GRANT APPLICATION - WEED AND SEED 05/22/02 RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that Proposed Resolution No. 11795 be approved. This Resolution would authorize the submittal of an application for fimding fi.om the U. S. Department o£ Justice for the Port Arthur Weed and Seed Program. BACKGROUND: The U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District filed an application for designation of the area bounded by Houston Ave, Woodworth Blvd., 19th Street and the Ship Channel as a Weed and Seed Site. We have been notified that this request has been approved and this area has Officially Recognized as a Weed and Seed site. This designation allows the City to apply for funding for implementation of the Weed and Seed Strategy. The City can apply for $175,000 in Weed and Seed funding and $50,000 in additional funding to address violent crime in public housing or other federally assisted housing. BUDGETARY/FISCAL EFFECT: These funds require no direct match of funds. STAFFING/EMPLOYEE EFFECT: The grant application provides for hiring a program coordinator. SUMMARY: I recommend that Proposed Resolution No. 11795 be approved. P.R. No. 11795 06/17/97 DLW RESOLUTION NO. A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING APPLICATION TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR FUNDING UNDER THE WEED AND SEED PROGRAM. WHEREAS, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District did file an application for the official recognition of an area of Port Arthur as a Weed and Seed site; and, WHEREAS, the City of Port Arthur has received notice that Official Recognition has been granted; and; WHEREAS, it is now necessary that an application for funding be submitted; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ARTHUR: THAT the City Manager is hereby authorized to submit an application with a proposed budget, substantially as attached hereto as Exhibit "A", for funding in the amount of $225,000.00 to the U.S. Department of Justice under the Weed and Seed Program and to execute such assurances and certifications as may be required. THAT a copy of the caption of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
