RE: P.O. 6629 :Retirement and transfer ownership of Police K-9 "Apollo"
Introduction:
The intent of this Agenda Item is to seek the City Council's approval for the retirement of
police canine "Apollo" and transferring the ownership of the canine to the personal care of
Deputy Chief Cory Cole.
Background:
"Apollo" is a 9 year-old German Shepherd that the police department has owned for
approximately 8 years and has been under the control of Deputy Chief Cory Cole for its entire
police career. Apollo is at his end of service with the department. Due to the canine's
temperament, he would be resistant to be placed under the care of any other handler. Deputy
Chief Cole has agreed to take ownership and to personally care for and assume all
responsibility and future care and cost associated with K-9 Apollo.
Budget Impact:
The is no budgetary impact for the retirement and transfer of ownership.
Recommendation:
It is recommended that City Council approve the retirement of police canine "Apollo" and
transferring the ownership of the canine to the personal care of Deputy Chief Cory Cole.

ORDINANCE NO.
A ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE RETIREMENT OF POLICE
CANINE "APOLLO" AND TRANSFERRING THE OWNERSHIP OF
THE CANINE TO THE PERSONAL CARE OF DEPUTY CHIEF CORY
COLE.
WHEREAS, the Police Department has a police canine known
as Apollo that has been in service for the City for the past 8
years and has been assigned to K-9 handler Deputy Chief Cory
Cole; and
WHEREAS, because of Apollo' s age and deteriorating
physical condition, he is at his end of service with the
department; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Cory Cole has agreed to take
possession and ownership of Apollo and assume all future
expenses and liability involved in the care and maintenance of
the canine; and
WHEREAS, it is deemed in the best interest of the City to
approve the retirement and transfer of Apollo to Deputy Chief
Cory Cole to personally care for and assume all responsibility
and future care and cost of ownership.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF PORT ARTHUR:
Section 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble
are true and correct .
Section 2 . That the City Council and the City of Port
Arthur authorizing the retirement of police canine "Apollo"
and transferring the ownership of the canine to the personal
care of Deputy Chief Cory Cole, who agrees to assume all
future responsibility, ownership, cost and care of the canine.
Section 3 . That a copy of the Ordinance shall be spread
upon the Minutes of the City Council .
Section 4 . That Deputy Chief Cole shall sign this
ordinance agreeing to the terms therein.
READ, ADOPTED AND APPROVED on this day of
