Description: The Fruits of Fifth Ward captures the history and heritage of the Fifth Ward community. The mural project which was supported by the Hisfiory Channel, the Mayor's Office and several local partners involved over 50 youth in the research, design and production phases of the project. The imagery for the mural depicts 21 leaders from the Fifth Ward that have made significant contributions to the community, the city and our country. The mural is passed by aver 2.8 million cars annually.(TxDOT 2006). The mural was created with the assistance of 12 teenagers from the WorkSource Youth Opportunity program and more than 30 kids from the Holthause Bays and Girls Club. The six part mural series is viewed by over 20,000 visitors to the Port of HQUSton annually. Ryan Middle School: Mosaic Totems Title: Our Sfory Dimensions: 7 totems (1) 144"H x 60" Dia. Budget: $12,000 Description: The mosaic totems at the entry way to the schools SPARK Park depict the row houses characteristic of the historic Third Ward neighborhood while infused with contemporary stylized African motifs and design patterns. The mosaics were IarQduced with the assistance of Ryan sfiudents and 6 young artists from the WorkSource. WorkSource Northside: Mosaic Mural ~' Medium: Ceramic the mosaics Funded b~: WorkSource via HoustonWorks USA Location: 1906 Cochran Completed: 11/2005 ~udc~et: $110,000 Description: The YO hlorfihside mural reflects the values and mission of the Youth Opportunity program of the WorkSource. Twenty-five youth participants worked alongside artists Reginald & Rhonda Adams, to design and produce the 1,200 square foot mosaic mural. Budget: $31,000 Description: Gateway enfiry sculpture into the SPARK Park afi Harlem Elementary School- k of four sided sculpture reflecfis the cultural diversity of Harlem Elementary School. Atop a stac books stand two-sided representations of an African-American boy, Latino girl, Caucasian boy and Asian girl. The brilliantly colored file mosaic students acre holding books on flop of their heads which serve as a support for a the mosaic sige~ that depicts the logo for the SPARK Park prograr~~.. The artists conducted five creativity workshops with Depelchin clients to develop the design and composition for the fins{ imagery of the mural. During each workshop, the participants were guided through creative writing and art making exercises which explored the dreams and aspirations that foster self-discovery. The students then created photo-collages of representing animate and inanimate objects that they felt best reflecte~c~ their feelings. The collages were then painted on a 6' x 3G' long canvas that currently resides iE~ fhe fat~~;il~~ v~faiting. area at the center°. With over 70 countries represents on campus the project was designed to embrace and celebrate elements from each 1=ntertainment S orts and Architecture. The continent including: Arts, Animals, Dress, Food, Religion, ~ P students were divided in to teams that were charged with the responsibility of researching various aspects of other cultures. Their research composed the design for the five mosaic covered columns. The mosaic columns are located in the school cafeteria where they are accessible tca the entire student body. Tf~e mural is one of 25 additional mosaic murals that were produced with Edison students on the school campus. Davis High School Mural Project Location: 1101 Quitman Artist(s): Reginald Adams, Israel Barbosa, Davis High School students Completed: 12/2001 Budget: $18,000 Funded by: Project Grad, Lindale Park Civic Club, the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, Keep Houston Beautiful, Monarch Paint, HISD, State Rep. Jessica Farrar, Diana Balderas Realty and Laurie Bricker Description: The mural was created with the assistance of 25 teenagers from Jefferson Davis High School, located in Houston's Near Northside community. These design for the mural was inspired by the chain of events resulting from the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The project began the day before 9/11 so the students expressed their concerns for issues such as were developed by students from Jeff Davis High School with the guidance of, public artists, Reginald Adams and Israel Barbosa. Since Sept. 10, 2001, Adams and Barbosa have worked with approximately 25 students from Davis High School to develop a mural project for the school and the community. During numerous 1 1/2 hour workshops, three days per week, Adams and Barbosa lead the students in dialogue about a mural design that reflected the students most important concerns: Family, Culture, Communication and Education. The design above is the result of over 36 hours of planning, brainstorming, research, and drawing. Title: The World In In Our Hands Dimensions:20'H x 100'L Meaium: ~-cryiic Na~~ ~~ Harvard Elementary School Mural Project Title: Soaring to New Heights Qimensions: (3} 9'H x 13'L Rdiedium: Acrylic paint and ceramic tiles Location: Harvard St. Arist(s): Mel DeWees, Reginald Adams, Mark Galbreath, Harvard Elementary School Kindergarten students Budget: $12,000 Completed: 12!2004 Funded by: SPARK Park Inc., Keep Houston Beautiful, Harvard Elementary School PTA Description: The mural triptych is a celebration of imagination, hope, dreams and aspirations. 25 students from each grade level at Harvard Elementary posed for the mural composition in positions as though they were flying. The students were then painted into three various exotic landscapes. Every student in the kindergarten class handpainted a ceramic tile, which comprise the borders far the painted a~~urals. The murals are aligned along the exterior walls of the Kindergarten classrac~n~s. As parents and visitors pass the front of the school these murals stand as a testament to the unbridled aptir~lis~~-r and imaginatiocls~ Qf auH~ youth. Ortiz Middle School: SPARK Park Title: Dream Big, Thing Bigger Dimensions: 13'H x 60'D Medium: Steel, concrete, ceramic the mosaics Location: 520 Mercury Dr Houston, TX 77013 Artist(s): Reginald Adams, Israel Barbosa, and Ortiz Middle School students Completed: 412006 Funded by: SPARK Park Inc. Budget: $21,000 Description: The theme of the entryway columns is soaring to unlimited heights. Imagery around the columns depict fantasy scenes of the children fighting dragons, flying in a space shuttle and being a princess over a royal kingdom. Atop the columns rest the schools mascot, the American Bald Eagle. The eagle stands as a representation of the courage, bravery, focus and determination that are students must have to achieve their own dreams and aspirations. 1'~he students worked alongside professional artist, Israel Barbosa and Reginald Adorns to complete the handmade ceramic tle mosaic mural designs.
