CURRAN, FIRE CHIEF~ MONROE JOHNSON/PAYLESS TIRE SERVICE DATE: NOVEMBER 8, 2002 COMMENT This memo is to inform you that on Wednesday, October 30, 2002 the Assistant Fire Marshal performed seven (7) fire safety inspections (maintenance inspections) at local tire dealers. These were follow-up inspections for compliance on inspections performed in the months of May and July. There were no new code requirements requested. Mr. Monroe Johnson, owner of Payless Tire Service, 849 Gulfway Drive, was the sixth inspection on that day. There were three minor house cleaning violations regarding tire storage and one violation of a fire alarm system inspection by an ADT service company inspector (the Assistant Fire Marshal could not access the fire alarm panel to make the inspection). The problem with access to the alarm panel was that Mr. Johnson did not have the key to unlock the alarm panel so that the Assistant Fire Marshal could look at the panel and determine if there were any alarm problems. The Assistant Fire Marshal was looking for the alarm panel tag by an ADT service company inspection for the current quarter as required by NFPA 72. Mr. Johnson told the Assistant Fire Marshal that the alarm service company did not give him a key and that the alarm service company said he did not need a key. I asked the Fire Marshal to fmd out if it was true that the key was not necessary or available. The Fire Marshal talked to ADT, the alarm service company for Payless Tire Service. ADT informed the Fire Marshal that Payless Tire Service had never requested a key. ADT said that it would take two to three days to get the key, even with an older alarm system as Mr. Johnson's, if it was missing. This inspection is an annual maintenance inspection to see if the code is maintained. There are no new code requests made by the Fire Department. Mr. Johnson has already complied with the building and fire codes with the original installation of the ADT fire alarm system and other safety items in his facility.
