A RESOLIITION AS IT PERTAINS TO THE PROJECT SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS YOIITH CONFERENCE TO BE HELD ON JIINE 23, 2008 (ACCOIINT NO. 134-1021-514- 54.01) WHEREAS, on August 31, 2004, the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Texas. awarded the City of Port Arthur's Community Prosecution Program a grant in the amount of $125,000; and WHEREAS, this grant has been modified and extended until June 30, 2008; and WHEREAS, on June 23, 2008, the Community Prosecution Program will conduct a one day conference at City Hall for the benefit of the youth of Port Arthur and their parents to finalize its commitments under the grant; and WHEREAS, the conference will consist of small group programs for children from ages 5-18; and WHEREAS, the program for elementary age children (age 5-10) will consist of appearances by Eddie Eagle and "MCGruff the Crime Dog"; and WHEREAS, the programs for middle and high school students (11- 18) will be facilitated by Lynette Elizande-Robinson; and WHEREAS, representatives from the Port Arthur Police Department will also work with this event and provide presentations z.Pzia~~a for parents on gun safety; and WHEREAS, Ms. Robinson will also conduct a workshop for parents entitled, "Children Need a Supportive Stage for Success" and will also share her experiences as a mother who lost her teenage son as a result of gun violence; and WHEREAS, the City Council deems it in the best interest of the citizens of Port Arthur to support the program facilitated by Ms. Robinson in the amount of $1,500 plus lodging expenses; and WHEREAS, the workshop will be held for the benefit of at risk youth and their parents/guardians. NOW THEREFORE, BS IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COIINCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ARTHIIR, TERAS: Section 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble are true and correct. ection 2. That the City Council herein authorizes the City Attorney or his designee to execute agreements in substantially the same form as Exhibits "A" with Lynette Elizande- Robinson to facilitate the conference. Section 3. That a copy of the caption of this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
