RSSOLIITION NO.
A RSSOLIITION CONCERNING THE FIITIIRE OF THS
IINIVERSITY OF TEAS MEDICAL BRANCH GALVESTON
(REQIIESTSD BY MAYOR PRINCE)
WHEREAS, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston
provides vital medical and psychiatric care to the citizens of Port.
Arthur and to Texans from throughout the state, with. over 41,000
Texans receiving inpatient care; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston provides accessible healthcare to many
thousands of Texans who otherwise would receive no healthcare; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston is a corner stone of the area's
economy and workforce, employing 12,000 area residents directly and
indirectly employing thousands more; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston adds $1 billion to Texas' business
volume every year; and
WHEREAS, every thing that happens at UTMB can be summed up in
two words "better health"; and
WHEREAS, UTMB-Galveston is a "safeguard of the health of our
state"; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston is attempting to "address the current
and projected workforce shortages among nurses and other health
professionals"; and

WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston is the third largest hospital in the
Houston/Galveston area; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston is one of only three .Level I Trauma
Centers in South East Texas; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston's "continued commitment to care for
medically underserved Texans remains a point of honor for faculty,
staff, and students"; and
WHEREAS, a reduction in funding at UTMB Galveston would reduce
access to healthcare. for vulnerable populations in Texas; and
WHEREAS, U'I'MB Galveston served Texans from counties throughout
Texas; and
WHEREAS, UTMB Galveston will be an important part in the long
term recovery from Hurricane Ike.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COIINCIL OF THE CITY
OF PORT ARTHIIR:
Section. 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble
are true and correct.
Section 2. That the City Council urges local, state, and
federal. elected officials to rebuild UTMB Galveston and restore
inpatient medical and psychiatric services and capacity to previous
levels.
Section 3. That the City Council asks that the. Texas
Legislature and Governor Perry make restoring UTMB Galveston a high
priority during the 81st Legislative session.

Section 4. That the City Council urges. the Texas
Legislature and the University of Texas Board of Regents to support
the Port 'Arthur and other communities by not cutting services and
jobs at UTMB Galveston.
Section 5. That a copy of the caption of this Resolution
be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
