HomeMy WebLinkAbout1.STUDENT DAY IN GOVERNMENTSTUDENT DAY IN GOVERNMENT PURPOSE: EHgibility: The Studem Day in Government program was initiated as a result 0 f the City Council wanting student residents to be more aware, and better informed, regarding the roles of local government and local govermnent officials. The program has evolved as a collaborative effort of the City of Port Arthur City Council and the Port Arthur Independent School District Board of Trustees Joint Committee. High school Juniors and Seniors are eligible to participate in the program. All senior kigh school students are eligible to participate in the ~,oting election~ Action Plan: Contacts: Previously, the students participating in the Student Day in Government Program were selected kY the school administration using various means (e.g. volunteers, student council members, etc.). It is the desire of the joint governing bodies that the individuals participating in the 2003 Stmdent Day in Government program earn their participating through an election process. The election process is to resuk in four (4) juniors and four (4) ~et~iors being "elected" and assigned to shadow the City Councilpersom for districts 1 -' 8. Additionally, an individual is to be elected to holcl the office of Mayor. The end resuk will be a nine (9) person advisory ccunci/. Program Announcement: March 27 - April 1, 2003 Campaigning: April 1 - April 16, 2003 Voting Election: April 17, 2003 Results of Election Canvassing: April 21, 2003 Meeting with Election Winners at City Hall: April 23, 2003 1:00 Student Day in Government City Council Meeting: April 28, 2003 3:30 p.m. Student Day in Government At City Council Meeting w/lunch: April 29, 2003 I-hrvey L.
