Re: Proposed Resolution No. 15208
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve the spending of $35,000 for the
purchase of three patrol dogs and the training of three canine officers.
Due to increasing violent crime in today's society, and the rapid growth of the City of
Port Arthur, it is felt patrol dogs would be beneficial in aiding police officers in their
endeavor to keep the citizens safe from violent criminals. These dogs would be used for
tasks such as searching buildings for burglary suspects, crowd control, perimeter security,
tracking and location of contraband and suspects, etc.
BUDGETARY/FISCAL EFFECT:
Money has been allocated in account number 001-1101-521.92-00 for the purchase of
three patrol dogs and the training of three canine officers.
STAFFING/EMPLOYEE EFFECT:
Adoption of this resolution would help to ensure the safety of officers and citizens. It
would also allow officers to spend less time out of service on building searches, etc.
