RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION NAMING THE SENIOR CITIZEN/YOIITH
CENTER (REQUESTED BY MAYOR PRINCE, MAYOR PRO-
TSM SEGLER, AND COUNCILMEMBER ALBRIGHT)
WHEREAS, service to one's fellow man indicates a character of
unselfishness; and
WHEREAS, Amos J. Evans, has unselfishly and effectively
served the citizens of Port Arthur with dignity and integrity in
many capacities (e.g. Board Member of both the Port Arthur
Housing Authority and of the YMCA, President of the P.T.A.,
member of the Port Arthur Industry and Community Leader Advisory
Group and the Valero Community Advisory Panel, NAACP Youth
Director, member of the NAACP Membership Committee, and Drug Task
Force); and
WHEREAS, Amos J. Evans was a recipient of numerous
recognitions and awards presented by many organizations and
individuals including: Who's Who Among Black Americans (Saint
Paul United Methodist Church); Congressional Community Award
(Jack Brooks); Unsung Hero Award (Nick Lampson); A World of
Difference Campaign to Fight Prejudices (The Beaumont
Enterprises); The Harold Ford Congressional Community Services;
American Institute for Public Services Award; and

WHEREAS, he maintained membership in or received recognition
from the following organizations: The Golden Band of New Hope
Baptist Church; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority; Golden Triangle Links, Inc.; Golden Gate Social and
Civic Club; Negro B.T.W.; Port Arthur Branch and Orange Branch of
the NAACP; P.A.C.E. of New York and from the U.S. Postal Workers.
WHEREAS, the pecuniary rewards for such meritorious service
too often do not rise to the deserving level; although, the
benefits of such service to the community are often without
measure; and
WHEREAS, his untiring and unselfish service and dedication to
duty to the citizens of Port Arthur have and will positively impact
this City for generations to follow; and
WHEREAS, the City Council deems it eminently proper,
appropriate and benefiting that a permanent recognition of such
meritorious service be created.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THS CITY COIINCIL OF THE CITY
OF PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS:
Section 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble are
true and correct.
Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Port
Arthur does hereby acknowledge with gratitude the extensive
effective service of Amos J. Evans to the citizens of Port
Arthur.

Section 3. That the City Council in recognition of said
services for the citizens of Port Arthur, desires to create a
permanent recognition in gratitude to Amos J. Evans.
Section 4. That the City Council of the City of Port
Arthur does hereby resolve and declare that the building currently
known as the Senior Citizen/Youth Center at 1308 9th Avenue shall
henceforth be named and dedicated as the Amos J. Evans Senior
Citizen/Youth Center.
Section 5. That appropriate signage and a plaque
recognizing this action shall be permanently affixed to such
building.
Section 6. That any resolution, ordinance, or
administrative policy in conflict herewith is hereby repealed, but
only to the extent of such conflict.
Section 7. That a copy of the caption of this Resolution
be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
READ, ADOPTED AND APPROVED on this day of
A.D., 2009, at a Meeting of the City Council of
the City of Port Arthur, Texas, by the following vote: AYES:
