HENRY DURHAM FOUNDATION
The Henry Durham Foundation is designed with the general purpose of teaching youth
the fundamentals of golf. We will become an affiliate of The Fkst Tee, an organization
designed to provide access and affordable golf facilitates to area youth. Port Arthur is in
the process of redevelopment and we feel the HenryDurham Foundation will be a viable
asset to our community. Golf is one of the few sports where a senior citizer~ can enjoy a
round of golf with a youth. We seek to attract youth who would not normally have an
opportunity to experience playing golf. There will be four levels our youth players will
advance though, Par, Birdie, Eagle and Champion. Research conducted by the National
Golf Foundation revealed that only two percent of children aged twelve to seventeen ever
try golf. Studies showed that the major barrier to attracting more children, and especially
economically disadvantaged children, to the game was the lack of places that welcomed
them, places they could physically get to, and places that they could afford.
Our mission is much broader than simply teaching kids how to play golf, we will also
incorporate a strong life skills component that includes community service and mentoring
opportunities. We will draw from area resources to assist us in accomplishing the task of
instilling the inherent values of the game of golf, and show participants how these values
transfer to other aspects of their lives. Students will be taught how to make decisions by
thinking about the possible consequences; how to define and set goals; the importance of
maintaining a positive attitude; and how values such as responsibility, honesty, integrity,
respect, confidence and sportsmanship transfer from the golf course to everyday life.
We have two events scheduled to help jump-start this gallant effort. 1. A golf tournament (details on reverse side)
2. A banquet will be held at Port Arthur Club June 27, 2003. The banquet cost is
$25.00 per person.
