Duriso, Chief of Police/ RE: P.R. 23585 —Resolution to accept an in-kind donation in the form of police canine "Athena". Introduction: The intent of this Agenda Item is to seek the City Council's approval of proposed resolution to accept a donation of a police canine from Tiffany Williams. Background: The Port Arthur Police Department was contacted in reference to a donation in the form of Police canine from Port Arthur Police K9 Officer Tiffany Williams. Ofc. Williams located a female, 6 months old Belgian Melinois canine named "Athena" from a D&C Dog training kennel in Woodlawn, Tennessee. Ofc. Williams would like to donate this canine to the City of Port Arthur to be utilized as a patrol dog. The City of Port Arthur will utilize the canine for narcotics detection, suspect apprehension, and tracking. The police canine coordinator informed that the canine "Athena," is not currently ready but can be trained. The training takes approximately six to eight months. Once donation is accepted, the city will be responsible for kennel and medical care. Budget Impact: None. A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO ACCEPT A DONATION IN THE FORM OF A POLICE CANINE "ATHENA" FOR THE PORT ARTHUR POLICE DEPARTMENT. WHEREAS, the Port Arthur Police Department was contacted in reference to a donation in the form of a police canine from Port Arthur Police K9 Officer Tiffany Williams; and WHEREAS, Officer Williams found a female 6 months old Belgian Malinois canine named "Athena" from a D&C Dog training kennel in Woodlawn, Tennessee and purchased the canine; and WHEREAS, Officer Williams would like to donate this canine to the City of Port Arthur to have the canine fully trained and utilized as a patrol dog; and WHEREAS, the Port Arthur Police Department will utilize the canine for narcotics detection, suspect apprehension and tracking; and WHEREAS, once the donation is accepted, the City will be responsible for kennel and medical care . NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ARTHUR: Section 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble are true and correct . Section 2 . That the City Council hereby authorizes the City Manager to accept the donation. Section 3 . That a copy of the caption of this resolution shall be spread upon the minutes of the City Council . READ, ADOPTED AND APPROVED on this day of A.D. , 2024 , at a Regular Meeting of the City Council of the City of Port Arthur, Texas, by the following vote : AYES: P.R.
