Smith Hydroponics is the way of the future for environmentally controlled agriculture. By giving the plants exactly what they need, when they need it, phenomenal yields can be achieved in a relatively small space. Using hydroponics is like creating the perfect soil. Better yet, it's like creating the perfect soil for each stage of the plant's development, supercharging your garden! Growing a hydroponic garden at home or in the greenhouse is educational and fun, if you know the basics. So here are a few things you should know to get started on the right foot. Choosing the right system. There are many styles of hydroponic systems available today, each with its strengths and weaknesses. So how do you know which one to choose? First, ask yourself what you want to grow. If you want to grow tomatoes, peppers or other long term crops, you should probably choose a rockwool based system. If you only want to grow lettuce, basil or other short term crops, NFT is a good choice. Finally, if you want to grow a variety of medium sized crops, such as cherry tomatoes, herbs or potted flowers, a small ebb - and -flow system is an excellent choice for beginners. If you're not sure which system is best for you, or if you want to do something special such as aquaponics or aeroponics, ask Harley (your friendly hydroponics consultant from Pro - HydroTech) and he will help steer you in the right direction! Choosing the right lighting. Light is the limiting factor for most hydroponic growing, so choosing the correct lighting system is very important. T -5 high output fluorescent fixtures are gaining in popularity, but Metal Halide lamps are still the first choice for most indoor gardeners. They are full spectrum lamps, suitable for both vegetative growth and flowering. If you're lucky enough to have a greenhouse, then High Pressure Sodium is the best choice. It has lots of the red end of the spectrum, so it's great for regulating day length and stimulating fruiting and flowering. If you have a few extra dollars to spend and you want the best lamp for the growroom OR the greenhouse, get the switchable ballast lamp. It can use either Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium bulbs, so you can start your plants with an MH bulb for a strong, healthy plant, then switch to the HPS bulb for a bumper crop of fruit and flowers! It is definitely worth the extra money, and you save money in the long run by not having to purchase expensive, "specialty" bulbs. By the way, make sure you put in new bulbs every year or two to keep your system growing strong! Older bulbs put out significantly less light than new bulbs, even if not burned out. Starting your seeds. The best way to start seeds for a hydroponic system is to use rockwool starter cubes. A sheet of starter cubes fits perfectly in a standard nursery tray. Simply soak the rockwool over night in conditioning solution, pour off the extra solution, and put a seed into each cube. Then cover the tray with a humidity dome, place it under florescent lights (or on a window sill), and wait. Once the seeds germinate and plenty of roots start coming out of the bottoms of the cubes, simply transplant them into larger rockwool growing blocks or directly into your hydroponic system. Propagation station. If you don't have a light cart and heating mats for starting seedlings, you should consider adding a propagation station to your lab. Heating mats keep the substrate temperature at around 78 degrees, ideal for germinating most seeds. Once the seeds germinate, florescent grow lamps should be placed two or three inches above the growing tips to keep seedlings from "stretching ". Pro - HydroTech carries all kinds of propagation and cloning supplies, even a tissue culture lab for more advanced micro - propagation applications! Ask Harley for more details. Grow, Bloom and Boost Nutrients. Hydroponic nutrient formulas provide all of the essential elements plants need for vigorous growth and top production. Grow formula is used at the vegetative growth stage. Bloom formula is used at the fruiting and flowering stage. And Boost formula is used to improve fruit quality. If you are growing vegetative crops, such as lettuce and basil, you will only need a good Grow Formula. But if you are growing tomatoes or peppers, you will need to start with the Grow Formula, then switch to the Bloom Formula at the fruiting and flowering stage. The Boost Formula is used to top off the reservoir during fruiting to help improve the quality, flavor and shelf life of the fmished fruit. For best results, always follow the directions on the fertilizer bottle, and completely dump and replenish the reservoir every ten days or so. Check the pH. If you want good results, get into the habit of checking the pH of the nutrient solution every day! It only takes a few minutes, and your plants will thank you for it. A pH test kit is easy to use. Just fill the test tube up to the line with nutrient solution, and add ten drops or so of indicator solution. The solution will change color to show you what the pH is. Most tap water is too alkaline for optimum plant growth, so you will probably need to add a little pH Lower to the reservoir from time to time. Re -test the pH until it is in the range of 5.8 to 6.4. The center of the bull's eye is 6.0, a beautiful dandelion yellow on your pH test kit indicator! Check the EC. If you don't have an EC meter, you should definitely consider purchasing one for your garden. EC (electrical conductivity) is a measurement of the total amount of dissolved minerals and fertilizer salts in the water. Low to medium EC promotes vegetative growth, and higher EC restricts vegetative growth. Higher EC's are best at the fruiting and flowering stage, when a plant's demand for nutrients is at its highest. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is over fertilizing. Too much fertilizer can stress or even kill plants! A quick check of the EC will tell you if the correct amount of fertilizer has been used. Pro - HydroTech has an EC chart for selected plants, and Harley can give you some handy tips for gourmet - quality production. Heating the reservoir. If the nutrient solution is too cold, important nutrients (especially phosphorus) become unavailable to the plant. Therefore, it is a good idea to add a reservoir heater to your system, especially in the winter. Simply set the thermostat to between 68 -75 degrees and place it in your nutrient solution. Some growers prefer to put the heater in a separate water tank so that "room temperature" water is added to the reservoir instead of ice cold water from the tap. Remember, avoid using water from a standard hot water tank because it may contain toxic levels of iron and other minerals. Also avoid using water from a water softener as it may contain harmful levels of sodium. Linear lamp movers. Adding a linear lamp mover to your system can help you get more light for your money, especially for longer rows. Typically, a stationary 400 Watt lamp will cover up to about a 4' X 4' area and a 1000 Watt lamp will cover up to a 6' X 6' area. Unfortunately, the higher you raise the lamp above the plants, the less light is available for strong photosynthesis. By adding a linear lamp mover, you can keep the lamp about a foot above the growing tips, with up to six foot travel lengths. The results? More intense light reaches the plants, and the plants grow more evenly. Even a 4' X 6' garden will benefit from a linear lamp mover. Ground Fault Interrupter. Does your electrical wiring include a Ground Fault Interrupter? If not, please add a GFI to your hydroponic system. If a submersible pump shorts out and you don't have a GFI, dangerous electric shocks are possible. Safety first! More Questions?
