O. 5755; Special Council Meeting July 10, 2007 Attached is P. O. 5755 canvassing the returns and declaring the results of a Runoff Election on June 30, 2007 as it pertains to the position of Mayor. Attached are the preliminary numbers from the Jefferson County Clerk's Office: FOR THE POSITION OF MAYOR: VOTE TALLY: Willie "Bae" Lewis, Jr. 2,192 Deloris "Bobbie" Prince 3,222 We expect to receive the final numbers on Monday, July 9, 2007, and they will be attached as Exhibit "A". AN ORDINANCE CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF A RUNOFF ELECTION ON JUNE 30, 2007 AS IT PERTAINS TO THE POSITION OF MAYOR WHEREAS, on January 30, 2007, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 07-11, providing for the conduct of the May 12, 2007 General Election for the purpose of electing the Mayor; and WHEI~EAS, Ordinance No. 07-11 also provide for a Special Election on May 12, 2007 for the purpose of filling the vacancies in Districts 1 and 2 due to the resignations of Councilmember Lewis and Councilmember Barker who had announced that they were running for Mayor; and, WHEREAS, due to a Constitutional Amendment being placed on the ballot, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 07-20, which delineated that the Jefferson County Clerk would coordinate, supervise, and handle the Elections, pursuant to a Joint Election Agreement; and WHEREAS, on May 22, 2007, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 07-30 that canvassed the results of the May 12, 2007 General and Special Election; and WHEREAS, the May 12, 2007 Elections resulted in the election of Jack Chatman to be the Councilmember for District 1 and Cal Jones to be the Councilmember.for District 2; and z .po5755 WHEREAS, pursuant to Ordinance NO. 07-30, the City Council called for a Runoff for the purpose of electing a Mayor on June 30, 2007; and WHEREAS, a recount petition was submitted as it pertained to the vote tally for the position of Mayor and an Order for a Recount was made; and WHEREAS, the City Council canvassed the returns and declared the results of the recount, pursuant to Ordinance No. 07-35, adopted on May 29, 2007; and WHEBF~AS, Ordinance No. 07-35 indicated that the runoff would be between Willie "Bae" Lewis and Deloris "Bobbie" Prince for the position of Mayor at the June 30, 2007 Runoff Election; and WHERE4%S, on June 5, No. 07-37, approving County Clerk for the WHEI~EAS, pursuant Guidry, County Clerk, 2007; and 2007, the City Council adopted Ordinance the polling locations as recommended 'by the June 30, 2007 Runoff Election; and to the Joint Election Agreement, Carolyn conducted the Runoff Election on June 30, WHEP~-~%S, pursuant to the returns the June 30, 2007 elections, the Runoff following votes: For the Position of M a~or: Willie "Bae" Lewis, Jr. Deloris "Bobbie" Prince filed by Carolyn Guidry after Candidates received the VOTE TALLY z.po5755 2 NOW THEREFOP~, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ARTHUR: Section 1. That the facts and opinions in the preamble are true and correct. Section 2. That the returns of said Runoff as it pertains to the Election of the Mayor, after being canvassed by the City Council, are found and declared to be true and correct. Councilmember Prince was elected Mayor as a result of the June 30, 2007 Runoff Election. Position 7 will be vacant, and there will need to be a special election on November 6, 2007 to fill the vacancy. z.po5755 4 Section 7. That this being an Ordinance for which publication is not required under the Charter of the City of Port Arthur, it shall not be published, but shall take effect and be in force immediately from and after its passage. Section 8. That a copy of the caption of this Ordinance be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
