O. 5237 which pertains to thc hiring of up to 5 additional police officers to provide flexibility in hiring in thc Police Department as to deal with staffing needs and opportunities. This was requested by the City Manager and Chief of Police. They do not expect this to exceed the budgctcd funds. AN ORDINANCE DELINEATING THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED POLICE OFFICER POSITIONS IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 00-27, dated May 2, 2000, delineated thc number of Police Officer positions as follows: CLASSIFICATION NUMBER OF OFFICERS Police Officers Police Sergeants Police Lieutenants Police Captains Deputy Chiefs Assistant Chief Chief of Police TOTAL 97 13 7 0 2 1 121 WHEREAS, the City's 2001/2002 budget only funded the following positions: CLASSIFICATION Police Officers Police Sergeants Police Lieutenants Police Captains Deputy Chiefs Assistant Chief NUMBER OF OFFICERS 87 13 7 0 2 1 z.po5237 Chicf of Police 1_ TOTAL 111 WHEREAS, the number of funded allocated police officer positions was rcduced to 111; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police and thc City Manager desire for thc City to hire up to five (5) candidates for entry level positions in excess of thc 87 entry level positions as dclincatcd above as to fill anticipated vacancies; and WHEREAS, thc City Manager and Police Chief determined that this is in the Department's best interest to hire above the 87 entry level positions duc to attrition or other staffing factors; and WHEREAS, the total funding for police officer positions is not expected to exceed thc amount allocated in thc 2001/2002 budget for personnel as a result of this Ordinance. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PORT ARTHUR: Section 1. The facts and opinions in thc preamble arc true and correct. Section 2. That thc Chief of Police and the City Manager are herein authorized to hire for entry level positions up to five (5) candidates for entry level police officers in excess of thc 87 entry level positions as denoted above or in excess z.po5237 of thc total 111 positions as to fill anticipated vacancies in thc Department. Section 3. That a copy of the caption of this Ordinance be spread upon the Minutes of the City Council.
