Statewide transportation enhancement projects awarded funding
(AUSTIN) - More than $143 million for transportation projects designed to enhance scenic,
historical, natural and cultural resources in Texas was approved today by the Texas Transportation
Commission at its monthly meeting in Austin.
The projects are part of the Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program that funds non-
traditional transportation projects such as those involving bicycle and pedestrian facilities,
landscaping and scenic beautification, historical preservation and environmental mitigation. The
program is federally funded and administered for the state by the Texas Department of
Transportation (TxDOT).
"This is a great tool for enhancing the quality of life in communities around the state
without burdening the limited amount of traditional transportation funds available," said John W.
Johnson, Texas Transportation Commissioner.
Enhancement projects are eligible for federal reimbursement of up to 80 percent of
allowable costs, which includes planning, design, environmental mitigation, property acquisition,
construction and administrative expenses. Preliminary project work must be authorized in advance
by the Federal Highway Administration for eligible cost reimbursement.
The approved projects were selected from 315 eligible projects, totaling more than $500
million, nominated last year by local authorities across the state.
Projects are evaluated for quality, transportation value and benefits.
"It's unfortunate that we are unable to award all of the eligible projects submitted for
funding," said Ken Bohuslav, TxDOT's design division director. "But we appreciate project
organizers and supporters' participation and cooperation demonstrated during the selection
process."
