HomeMy WebLinkAboutPR 11648: LIBRARY CARD CABINETSMEMORANDUM City of Port Arthur Date: February 15, 2002 To: . Steve Fitzgibbens, City Manager From. Ray Cline, Library Director RE: Proposed Resolution 11648 recommending tm~ffer of excess card Region V Education Service Centar / RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that card catalog cabinets which are excess to the needs of the City of Port Arthur, and which can reasonably be used by Region V Education Service Center (a division of the Texas State Department of Education located in Beaumont, TX) be transferred to Region V under an intergovernmental transfer. BACKGROUND: The Port Arthur Public Library ceased using card catalog cabinets for the public catalog about 10 years ago and these cabinets have been in storage since that time. Mr. Mark C. Perkins, Field Service Agent for Region V, contacted me about 6 months ago to ask if we had excess cabinets. He wants to use them for 3.5" computer disk storage. His needs represent only a small fraction of the total drawer units we have in storage. Most libraries have abandoned their card catalogs in favor of the electronic version and there is an overabundance of these units available. Those units that cannot be placed at Region V will be recommended for disposal at the next City auction. BUDGETARY/FISCAL EFFECT: The probable value of these cabinets at auction is minimal due to the number of used units available. STAFFING/EMPLOYEE EFFECT: None. SUMMARY: It is recommended that such card catalog cabinets, which are excess to the needs of the City, and that, can reasonably be used by Region V Education Service Center, be transferred to them by appropriate intergovernmental channels. cc: City Attorney P. R. No. 11648 02/15/2002 - ts RESOLUTION NO. Executive Director Mr. Ray Cline, Director Port Arthur Public Library 4615 9th Avenue Port Arthur, Texas 77642 Dear Mr. Cline: Thank you for taking the time to visit with me on January 7, 2002. You and all concerned can be proud of the outstanding public library provided to the citizens of Port Arthur. As per our discussion, I would like to request between one and three of the library card catalog cases. I know that you have upgraded to the computerized process and therefore the card catalog cases have been deemed surplus or unneeded. Thank you again for considering this request. Please telephone me at 409-951-1839 or e-mail at, mperkins@esc5.net, to inform me of the decision. If it is deemed appropriate to give one to three cases, I will arrange for loading and transportation at a time convenient to you. Sincerely, ~ Mark C. Perkins, Field Service Agent
