He is a graduate of that city's Lincoln High School and the University of Oklahoma where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. Joe comes from a football family, and his knowledge and understanding of the games runs deep. After 41 years of coaching, his dad is the most winning active high school coach in Texas. His brother was a star quarterback at North Texas State University. Joe's involvement in community work has been extensive. He has served as chairman of the Ann Arundel County Association for Retarded Citizen and has been active with the Maryland Special Olympics. A spokesman for the Oklahoma Society to Prevent Blindness, he has also been an advisory board member of Wednesday's Child, an organization dedicated to orphaned children in Oklahoma City. In addition, Joe served as a member of the first Sports Council of the National Foundation of Ileitis and Colitis and was a volunteer for No Greater Love, the annual Christmas celebration for children of fathers killed in service. Joe has been very active in the fight against drug abuse and appeared with former first lady Nancy Regan on several occasions on behalf of this cause. During his career with the Washington Redskins, he was selected as the team's Man of the Year for his off-the-field commitments to society. Joe's ties to his alma mater remain strong and recently chaired a campaign that raised over eight hundred thousand dollars to help fund O.U.'s athletic department. Joe is listed in Who's Who Among High School Athletes, Who's Who Among College Athletes, and Outstanding Young Men of America. He is a member of Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, and the University of Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame. COLLEGIATE At the end of his high school football career, Joe was probably one of the most sought after athletes in Texas history. Chosen to Parade Magazine's High School Ali-American Roster, he attended the University of Oklahoma. He achieved Ali-Big 8 honors for three consecutive years and was Ali-American in 1974 and 1975. He was also a runner-up for the Heisman both these years. It was the 1978 season that Joe achieved what is regarded as the most outstanding individual performance in the history of Monday Night Football, as he threw a touchdown pass, caught a pass for a touchdown, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Chosen as the 1981 Redskin MVP by his teammates, Joe led the club in rushing and receiving; the only player in Redskin history to do this. Joe's 70 pass receptions were two shy of the club record at the time, and the most by a running back. The 1982 and 1983 seasons ended in Super Bowl visits for the Washington Redskins. In 1983, Joe led thc NFL with a $.3-yard average per carry, while gaining 772 yards on 125 carries, 47 catches for 454 yards and 6 touchdowns.
